AIM HIGHER

An Open Letter to the Australian Government

In sport, we understand ambitious goals, and understand what it means to achieve them.

When it comes to climate, we expect the same from our leaders.

Australia needs clear, credible targets to reduce carbon emissions. That's why we're calling on government to commit to an emissions reduction target of at least 75% below 2005 levels by 2035.

The science is clear. 75% is the minimum scientific floor required to do our fair share globally. It sends a powerful signal, and would cement Australia as a global leader.

This target is absolutely achievable.

Current state and territory commitments already point to a reduction of between 66-71% by 2035, putting a national 75% target well within reach.

Blessed with world-class natural advantages, we've already got the highest penetration of rooftop solar in the world, putting Australia in pole position to demonstrate our leadership and seize the opportunities of the energy transition.

No athlete aims to finish in the middle of the pack. As a country, we shouldn’t either.

Every fraction of warming means more extreme weather events, forcing cancellations, relocations, and more threats to the sports that unite us.

With so many Australians backing climate action, we can hit this target.

Let’s set the goal and go all in. It's good for Australia, and it's good for sport.
